Kenya’s population is young, with at least 70% of the people aged below 35 years. This presents an opportunity for young people to drive the economy if they have the right skill sets and are gainfully engaged.
In Kenya, 34% of the population lives in extreme poverty (World Bank 2021). Additionally, one million young people enter the job market from different institutions out of whom less than 100,000 get formal employment. The rest join the informal market, contributing to the high youth unemployment rate of 39%. Specifically, unemployment rates are much higher (30% for those aged 20 to 24 years and 20% for those aged 25 to 29 years) than the national average of 10%
Through our Economic Empowerment pillar, we want to address the issue of unemployment among Kenya’s youth by partnering with organizations to improving livelihoods through enterprise development, value adding and innovative agriculture as well as agribusiness and Ecopreneurship to reduce their vulnerability to societal ills.
We are also integrating Sustainable Philanthropy and Humanitarian Response to ensure we deliver impactful philanthropic investments to address communities’ urgent needs and immediate concerns.
