Over the years, the Government of Kenya has made progress in increasing access to healthcare under the Universal Health Coverage commitment. However, current data shows evident gaps that impede attainment of health for all. For example, according to the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (2014) maternal mortality stands at 362 for every 100,000 live births, translating to 5,000 women and girls dying each year, and 250,000 suffering from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth such as fistula. The same gap is evident in neonatal mortality which is at 22 deaths for every 1,000 live births. While 92% of mothers seek antenatal care, only 58% of pregnant women attend at least four visits before delivery. Overall, only 61% of births take place in health facilities assisted by skilled attendants.
In our current strategy our focus under health is to improve access to and utilization of Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Adolescent and Child Health (RMNCAH) services in order to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality rate in Kenya. The Foundation will also integrate screening and referrals for non-communicable diseases to enable early detection, treatment, and management.
